In 1524 the Spanish explorer Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba sailed his ship up the San Juan River into a huge freshwater lake and founded the city of Granada.  On his way he passed the island of Ometepe with two majestic volcanic mountains and a archipelago chain of 450 islands called Las Isletas.  

These tropical islands were formed millions of years ago when the volcano Mombacho erupted.  Today they are home to  many species of birds and fish and many have homes complete with swimming pools, boat docks, TV and WiFi.  They are situated only a few minutes boat ride from the shore of the lake where Granada is located.  Granada has the charm of an old world colonial city but with all the modern conveniences.  The islands range in size from less than a quarter of an acre up to several acres in size.  They all feel the fresh cool prevailing breezes coming off the lake and just far enough from the city to enjoy peace and nature but close enough to ride a horse drawn carriage to have dinner in one of the many restaurants and dine on the fresh seafood the lake has to offer.  One hour drive on good roads from the international airport and 10 minutes by boat and you are in your hammock on your own island.
